Best Practices of Web 2.0 pattern’s Rich User Experience

Many years ago, user experience has been the most significant element in the spread of internet and computer usability. A higher user experience enables people from all over the globe to access and use the Internet, along with a wide variety of computer applications. Rich User Experience (RUE) is one of the factors of Web 2.0 patterns described by Tim O’Reilly which is going to be discussed in this post.

What is rich user experience?
Rich user experiences (RUE) are a combination of Graphical User Interface (GUI) – style2 applications and multimedia content. In other words, RUE is the transfer of using applications installed on the desktop to applications surfed from the web browser and these web applications works and gives a similar experience of the installed desktop applications. In addition, the number of creating a web-based application is growing more than the computer-based application in the Web 2.0 world. Moreover, there a lot of technologies like AJAX, Adobe Flex, Adobe Flash, JQuery, HTML5, SilverLight, JavaFX and OpenLaszlo which can be used to build web applications, and it provides web users with a richer and more responsive user experience which we are looking for here.

There are several examples of Web 2.0 applications with an interactive and rich user experience. According to O’Reilly, the first web application in this trend was Gmail, followed by Google Maps, which used a collection of technologies called AJAX. Our example of rich user experience in this post is Panoramio.

What is Panoramio?

Panoramio is a community-powered site for exploring places through photography: cities, natural wonders, or simply anywhere you might go. Panoramio is a photo viewer for the talents of its contributors, a community where members determine the content, and a place to see the world. the perfect thing about Panoramio photos is that doesn’t contain commercial messages.

According to WikipediaPanoramio

Panoramio is a geolocation-oriented photo sharing website.

This web-based application employs the application programming interface (API) of Google Earth and Google Maps, which I have covered in my previous post, to access all the uploaded photos and new ones that being added at the end of every month. Panoramio is a Multilanguage site. Its goal is to enhance the user’s knowledge about a given area by sharing the photos that other users have taken at the same area. Moreover, it is easy to pinpoint where the photos have come from on Google maps.

Dose Panoramio implements the best practices of the rich user experience?

  • Combine the best of desktop & online experiences

    photo

    Iphon app

Panoramio does not have a desktop application; however it has a rich interactive interface with high user engagement and fast performance. Users can collaboratively edit the name or place of others photos from any Internet connected computer. This application has its independent platform, ubiquitous access, and collaboration.

  • Usability and simplicity first

Panoramio is a simple web 2.0 application that engages its users by its efficiency. it benefit from data entry optimization and client side validation. users have to create an account and register their details with the site, after that they can add their favourite photos and simply share it with millions of people around the world. Finding photos is just a matter of searching for a certain place by texting in the search box. Then, you will be displayed with a map with various pinpoints and photos of attractions around the area.

Panoramio Website

Panoramio employs a combination of technologies such as JavaScript, HTML with the use of Google Ajax API’s which delivers to rich user experience.

  • Search over structure

Users can search for photos by tabbing the name of the place, the user name in the search box or by exploring Google earth map. In addition, there are other categories that can narrow the user search like popular, recent, places, tours and indoor.

  • Preserve content addressability

This application is the best example of preserving the photos addressability by pinpointing them on the Google maps.

  • Deep, adaptive personalization

Panoramio automatically suggests photos based on the photo owner gallery, the user viewing area and hash tags. Moreover, Google Company had improved its Google Earth’s ‘tour guide’ by adding 100,000 new tours and a million new photos from Panoramio. Read more here.

Some Issues:

  • Reviewed photos are added to Google Earth once a week. It may take up to three weeks for your new photos to be reviewed, so, in all, you may have to wait up to four weeks.
  • According to the decision of the owner Photos are copyrighted as standard copyright, copyleft, Creative Commons license, and so on. Third parties can display Panoramio user’s photos using the Panoramio API, but they must credit them by displaying their name under their photo. However, if Panoramio user suspects that the owner of another site copied their photo improperly, they’ll need to contact that site to resolve things.
  • Others can use, copy, print, or download a photo from Panoramio, but they must get explicit permission from the photographer. To contact a photographer to ask for permission, they have to add a comment to the photo or use the Private messaging feature.
  • Google as the sponsor for Panoramio may collect some information about the users and use it improve their applications and they like improving the ‘tour guide’ in Google earth using Panoramio user’s photos.
  • You can read more about these issues through Privacy Policy.

Panoramio is a great application for those who like to travel and want to share their travel photos with others around the globe. Panoramio makes it really easy for you to upload and link photos to the locations where they are taken. This makes it more than just a photo sharing website; actually it makes it quite useful.

What do you think?

Is Panarmio good example of Rich User Experience? Why?

  1. This is a really cool application! Seems like a good way to share travel photos – are you able to say email a link to your photos only and then your friends can click around on the map and see where each of your photos were taken? That would be a great way to track a holiday. Also, a lot of new cameras have a GPS and embed the GPS data into the photo metadata – is Panoramio able to use this to automatically add locations?

    • Yes, Panoramio is a great app for sharing photos for traveling lovers. Good question, yes you can email a link of your photos to your friends and they easily can track and view all your other photos through it. Sure, If you have a camera that can store the geolocation information with a photo when you upload it, you don’t have to map it in Panoramio: the information contained with the photo lets Panoramio automatically map the photo.
      Thanks for dropping by Monique.

  2. Great post, Eman, on a great application. I think you have really shown how it delivers a “rich user experience”. I would like to know more about any issues or downsides to the application. Also, given the value of content being the ‘next intel inside’, do you know who has ownership of the uploaded images?

    • Thanks Bronwyn for your valuable comment, I had added some issues that may distribute Panoramio users. You can check them and I hope it answers your question. If you have more questions, please don’t hesitate.
